Erich Fromm's Disobedience as a Psychological and Moral Problem In "Disobedience as a Psychological and Moral Problem," Erich Fromm (1963) argues that society will self-destruct without achieving freedom through disobedience. Fromm begins with analogies of Hebrew and Greek mythology showing how disobedience to a god freed humans. Using this correlation, Fromm shows freedom as a condition for disobedience, and vice- versa. Therefore, Fromm proclaims that without disobedience the human race could destroy itself within a generation. Frommââ¬â¢s article, first published in 1963, stems from fear of a third world war. Despite the ââ¬Å"outdatedâ⬠comment by Behrens and Rosen in the introduction, the article still applies to suggestion human nature during the War on Terrorism. Fromm (1963) Fromm predominately uses logos, with underlying pathos (appeals to emotions) when discussing religion. Fromm adds a section near the end about Hitlerââ¬â¢s right hand man, Adolf Eichmann, which seems out of place. When the majority continually stops any outbreak of disobedience, I believe over time we will accept the initial concept they wanted to fight. Great Gatsby Coming of Age Novel Essay
The novel the Great Gatsby isnââ¬â¢t your classical coming of age novel at least for the most part. This is because Nick Caraway is the only character who actually ends up changing by the end of the novel. Furthermore coming of age novels refer to a character(s) that pass the rite of passage in order to enter manhood or womanhood. Therefore this novel is about the growth of maturity. The story begins with Nick attending dinner at the Buchannan house. Nick was at first very impressed and fascinated with the beauty, glamour, and wealth of Daisy and Tom. This can be seen in the quote ââ¬Å"Their house was even more elaborate than I expectedâ⬠(Fitzgerald, pg.6). This point of view is oblivious and is unaware of the saying ââ¬Å"itââ¬â¢s not whatââ¬â¢s on the outside but whatââ¬â¢s on the inside. However this point of view drastically changed by the end of the novel. By the end of the novel Nick can no longer even bare to stand the sight of Tom or Daisy, let alone shake their hands. This is best seen with the quote ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s the matter, Nick? Do you object to shaking hands with me? Yes. You know what I think of you.â⬠This is because Tom told Mr. Wilson to go and kill Gatsby because he had been the person driving the car. Furthermore he canââ¬â¢t stand Daisy because even though she loved Gatsby she retreated behind Tom and let Gatsby take the hit for her. This resulted in Gatsbyââ¬â¢s death and later his funeral to which neither Daisy nor Tom attended. The strongest representation of Nickââ¬â¢s growing maturity is the fact that he realises that Tom and Daisy are both weak and gutless people. This understanding was only obtained when Nick looked for what was on the ââ¬Å"insideâ⬠. The quote ââ¬Å"They are careless people, Tom and Daisy- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had madeâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ is really powerful and Fitzgerald is warning others about people who are like this. The novel The Great Gatsby may not be a coming of age novel but it is aà pretty darn good book about growing in maturity, following your dreams, and fighting for love. Unfortunately Nick is the only character who actually realised this and learned from it.

Unconditional Love Love is extremely precious. With all the commitments and contracts and vows made, love continues to be precious. Asha Bandele, the author of and as The Prisoners Wife: A Memoir, realizes that no matter if she is suspended from school or divorces her husband or disappoints her parents, love will conquer and triumph over hardships and mistakes. Asha was not a deprived child growing up in New York. She was able to attend respectable schools, live in a nuclear home, and have exposure to the arts (25). Her parents cared for her and gave her opportunities they did not have living in a world of anger and prejudice. Asha was exposed to love as a child and seems to believe as an adult that love does not haveâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Ashas relationship with Rashid is two dimensional because of this addiction she seems to have. Previously to meeting Rashid, Asha abused drugs and alcohol as though the two were like eating candy and drinking water. This lifestyle is one dimension. H er second dimension is this new addiction that she feels towards Rashid. She needs to talk to him. She needs to see him. She needs to feel him. These needs are not illegal such as her drug abuse, something she could have been jailed for. This new addiction of love is the irony. Asha is guilty of love, yet there is no sentence in jail for this guilt. The most heartfelt pages that Asha writes are the ones that are descriptive of her emotions, thoughts and feelings. Her opening pages describing love and its different aspects are gripping as she puts her thoughts of love on paper (13-17). Then Asha writes a list of wandering thoughts and lurking questions for Rashid such as what did you do on the day they came and got you, the day you were arrested? Was there some sort of foreboding? Did you feel that it was coming (59)? Lastly, reading about the excruciating procedure Asha has to endure every time she enters the gloom of the prison walls to visit Rashid becomes not only a de sensitizing process to Asha, but also to the reader.
